Rest in a Restless City

The counter-cultural practice of sabbath rest and how it reshapes your relationship with work and God.

Mumbai doesn't rest. There's always another meeting, another deadline, another opportunity that demands your attention right now.

And so we don't rest either. We wear busyness as a badge. We feel guilty when we're not productive. We check email at midnight and respond to messages at 6 AM.

The Radical Call to Stop

Into this culture of constant motion, God says something shocking: Stop.

"Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy." This isn't a suggestion. It's one of the Ten Commandments. right up there with "don't murder" and "don't steal."

Why? Because rest is an act of trust. When you stop working, you're declaring: "God, I trust that the world won't fall apart without me. I trust that You are sovereign, even when I'm not producing."

What Sabbath Looks Like for Us

We don't prescribe exactly how to practice rest. But here are some principles our community has found helpful:

One day a week, stop earning. No email, no hustle, no side projects. Let your identity rest in who you ARE, not what you DO.

Do things that restore your soul. For some that's a long walk by the sea. For others it's cooking a meal slowly. For others it's reading fiction or playing with their kids without checking their phone.

Worship together. There's a reason Sunday gathering is central. It reorients our week around what matters most.

The Freedom of Rest

Here's the paradox: those who rest well, work better. Not because rest is a productivity hack. but because when you're grounded in God's love, you stop striving out of anxiety and start working out of overflow.

Mumbai needs people who are present, not just productive. The world needs workers who are rested, not just busy.

May we be that kind of community.
