Faith & Work: A Mumbai Perspective

How do you stay faithful to Christ in a city that never stops? Reflections from professionals in the church.

Vikram S.

New City Mumbai

Mumbai never stops. The trains run from 4 AM. The markets open before dawn. The office lights stay on past midnight. In a city built on hustle, how does faith fit in?

The Sacred-Secular Divide

Most of us were taught. implicitly or explicitly. that "real" ministry happens in church. Preaching, worship leading, Bible study. Everything else is just... the rest of life.

But Scripture paints a different picture. God placed Adam in a garden and told him to work it. Jesus spent 30 years as a carpenter before three years of public ministry. Paul made tents.

Work is not a necessary evil to fund ministry. Work IS ministry.

What We've Learned

Over the past few years, our community has been wrestling with what it means to be faithful at work. Here are some things we've discovered:

Your excellence at work is worship. When you write clean code, close a fair deal, teach a class well, or design something beautiful. that's an offering to God. Not because it earns His love, but because it reflects His character.

Your ethics at work are witness. In a city where shortcuts are expected, simply being honest is radical. Refusing to cut corners, treating people with dignity, honouring commitments. these things preach louder than words.

Your relationships at work are mission. You spend more waking hours with colleagues than with anyone else. The gospel naturally flows through genuine friendships built on trust and care.

The Challenge

None of this is easy. Mumbai's professional culture rewards overwork. It celebrates those who sacrifice everything. health, family, rest. on the altar of career growth.

The gospel gives us permission to resist this. Our identity is not our output. Our worth is not our salary. We can work hard AND rest well, because our security is in Christ, not in the next promotion.

An Invitation

If you're a working professional in Mumbai trying to figure out how faith fits into your 9-to-9. you're not alone. That's literally why this church exists. Come wrestle with us.
